Description

For the Pastry:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric (for color)
  • 1 cup cold butter, diced
  • 1/2 cup ice water

For the Filling:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

 


Instructions

  • To make the pastry, combine flour, salt, and turmeric in a large bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water and mix until the dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  • For the filling, heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, sautΓ©ing until soft. Add ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  • Stir in curry powder, thyme, allspice, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Add beef broth and simmer until most liquid has evaporated. Stir in breadcrumbs and set aside to cool.
  • Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface. Cut into circles using a large cookie cutter or a bowl.
  • Spoon filling onto half of each dough circle, leaving a border. Moisten the edges with water, fold over to enclose the filling, and crimp the edges with a fork.
  • Place patties on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Notes

  • To achieve an extra golden finish, brush the patties with a beaten egg before baking.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper according to your heat preference.
